Remarkably Bright Creatures

A curmudgeonly giant Pacific octopus. A widow working the night shift. An unlikely friendship that unspools a thirty-year mystery.

★★★★★ A book-club favorite by Shelby Van Pelt

Narrated, in part, by the octopus

“Day 1,323 of my captivity. I have observed your species for a very long time, and I will tell you plainly: you are going to want this story. I am rarely wrong about such things.”

— Marcellus · Giant Pacific Octopus, Sowell Bay Aquarium

The Premise

Some friendships cross more than species.

Tova Sullivan has cleaned the floors of the Sowell Bay Aquarium every night since her husband died. The work keeps the silence at bay, and the silence is loud — her son Erik vanished into the cold water thirty years ago, and no one ever found out why.

Then there’s Marcellus: the aquarium’s brilliant, escape-artist giant Pacific octopus, who has quietly decided that humans are mostly hopeless. Mostly. He makes an exception for Tova. And as the two form a wordless, improbable bond, Marcellus begins piecing together the one secret Tova has spent three decades trying to understand.

Tender, funny, and full of heart, it’s a novel about grief, second chances, and the family we find in the most unexpected places.

Why readers can’t put it down

Warm, witty, and quietly unforgettable.

If you loved A Man Called Ove or Lessons in Chemistry, you’ll find a new favorite here.

An unlikely friendship

A grieving widow and a grumpy octopus who understand each other better than anyone else does.

A mystery worth solving

A thirty-year-old disappearance, unraveled one clever observation at a time.

A voice like no other

Marcellus narrates with dry wit and surprising tenderness — you’ll never read an octopus the same way.
